Turning of the Tarot

Sounds like a suspenseful tale. I may have to use that title one day. But right now I’m sitting in a strange basement, waiting for my cousin to have her tarot cards read. When I say strange, not as much as ‘odd’ just a place I wouldn’t imagine a place to go to have cards read. Its a man’s den, complete with sound system, bar, leather sectional and hockey paraphenalia. Just down the hall, there was a separate room, with a very nice lay-out and a very exotic room that my cousin was led into to have her cards read. It very much contained the essence and feel of where a tarot session would take place. Silky tapestry hanging on the walls, with unique mirrors and a taller table with 2 high back chairs. There were celestial ornaments around the walls and positioned on the floor with decorative mirrors. The most quirky, yet charming element to the room was the mismatched antique tea cups and saucers, delicately placed out on top of a boxed vintage  pedalled sewing machine.

Tarot Cards – Nothing abnormal about this experience. I’ve been having my cards read since I was 14 years old, as I’ve always have had an open, not gullible, mind. I’ve always been a little intuitive, sometimes maybe even a little clairvoyant. I’ve yet to come up with the right combination of numbers for lotto max or 6-49, but I’m working on that one. Whether it’s with having de je vu’s, having prophetic dreams come true or when the phone rings and I’m able to know whose calling me ( ya ya not by call display- smart ass -I knew that’s what you all were thinking). One time I had had a feeling that a friends house was haunted, something about the basement was stuck in my head. As turned out, someone had been murdered there, and the body was found at the base of the stairs.

But I do truly believe there are people among us, who have a ‘gift’. Why not ? It’s been proven people on average only use 10% of their brain capactiy – 10% !!! Strange isn’t it. I mean the average brain is about 10 lbs, approximately. All those neutrons, neurons, proton cells working consistently – consciously & subconsciously 24/7 – it’s like a natural super computer. Why can’t some of us unlock what we all potentially have? Maybe if we were all more open to the thought, we can obtain enlightenment of something that we can’t quite comprehend. The Pessimist in my is very optimistic over this thought but the realist has told us before we’re all crazy! There is a fine line between scientific proof and mere parlour tricks. Dealings with the occult have intrigued and scared people since the beginning of time. People naturally fear the unknown and pick up their torches and pitch forks when an unexplained miracle happens, whether or not its for good intentions. So many have perished throughout the ages for pursuing what they proclaim to be natural gifts, whether its witchcraft, divination, predictions, telepathic ability – the list goes on!

So, if someone has the ‘gift’ the one thing we all have, but this particular individual can tap into it and give us something to guide us in life, why not try? The one time I was completely convinced, was when I tried something different and had my tea leaves read. The young girl with a ’20 flapper hat and modest long skirt (strange for July) stared intently into the bottom of the fragile cup. Then her head shot up, looked me straight in the eye, stretched out her finger and announced, “You’re a Writer! You write! Keep writing cause something big is around the corner, your next project is the one!” How on this green earth could she have just ‘guessed’ that one. Frankly, I was blown away. I had goose bumps all over my body, she had the gift!  Keeping in mind there are so many devious people out there that are just trying to make a buck. These are the same people that seem to have convinced themselves that they actually are mythical and bullshitted themselves in the process, all probably because they like the sound of their voice (flare for the dramatics, as I like to say) while they are ripping you off, that’s classic! Illusionists, magicians, mind readers and the like are all for entertainment. Anyone knowing this going in, should know its all make belief at the highest end. People that deliberately con vulnerable people who are at a loss for answers in their life for a quick $30 – are scum. One would hope those people are coming back in the next life as the pond scum that floats in the heat on a still pond. Its because of these rip off artists, I have seldom had my cards read in recent years. A good Tarot Card Reader is hard to find, yet they seem to be a dime a dozen. Is it possible to have that many within a certain radius that have locked into their gift? I highly doubt it. For as much as I would like to believe that the masses of readers are legitimate, I also like keeping that $30 in my pocket for a rainy day.

I hadn’t been to a Card Reader in several years. I happened to walk into this one local shop to buy a gift for a friend, when I over heard the proprietor finishing up a reading at the front counter. After a quick conversation on different types of healing stones, I asked if he had time to read my cards, ‘Certainly’, he said. Oh, happy day. Well, unfortunately this fellow liked the sound of his own voice. He started to tell me all about myself, even before I touched his deck of cards. If you’ve never had your cards read before, there are certain protocol that most readers use as a ritual, which fluctuates from person to person because of this or that preference but here are some things to consider.

1) A good reader should always ‘clear’ the deck of cards after each reading. Whether this is shaking them, knocking on top of the deck (or have you knock on the deck) or have the cards concealed in a red, preferably satin cloth between use.

2) The Reader should never ask any questions of you, either before or during the reading. They are drawing their own conclusions, and can easily lead people into generalizing., “Someone close to you has passed away”, too vague. “You have a Son”, that’s a 50/50.

3) Visual cues: well there are other tell-tale signs, such as a wedding ring on your ring finger. You wear a Harley shirt, possibly, you could own a motorcycle.

This one particular fellow, after he told me all about myself and my personality – just by looking at me – asked me where I worked for a living; what did I do for work? asked how many children I had, and if they were a boy or a girl. I’ll never see that $30 again – a fool and their money are soon parted. But you don’t know till you try. Without outing this particular establishment, I’ll let Karma weed him out.

Anyway, not long after that I found a girl I trusted, and the information she gave me was informative enough, and fluky enough to view her a valid the ‘Real thing’. She was able to tell me stuff that only a few people in my life would know and for me to hold onto some hope, while extinguishing that harrowing experience 2 months previous. Enough so that I recommended her to other’s, such as my cousin.

Tarot Card reading isn’t for everyone, and in my mind its not taboo even though it is always connected to the occult realm to a certain extent. With everything, the information you take away from it, you always take it with  a grain of salt. Look at your horoscopes printed in the daily paper and tell me, do you seriously believe the same day’s predictions apply to 1/12 th of the population day in and day out? I don’t think so.

About jnflamand

I love to write, in fact, my mind is a like a running tap most days! It's unfortunate that with having a crazy, busy life most original ideas are lost in the shuffle. However there are the few that get through, and as twisted as they are, they get my creative juices flowing. "What If....." has to be my favorite definitive statement, as it all starts from there. I like it as a starting point as I try to bend the concept and make my ideas believable. I write to make others 'Think'! www.jnflamand.com
